We spend most of our waking hours, and therefore most of our lives, working at our jobs.  No matter what that job is, considering we spend so much time there, shouldn't we all put some effort into being the best we can be at it, and reaching the next level of success?  No matter what you do, there is always room for learning, growth and development, and with this, financial rewards are soon to follow.

I have put together 5 different ways that you could start pursuing now, to boost your career to the next level, and achieve new heights of success.

1. Take a Course

Management of any company love to see that their employees are self starters that are enthusiastic about their own growth and potential and take their own personal and professional development seriously.  By taking a course that you can relate back to your responsibilities, you are proving to your boss that you are keen to grow and willing to invest in yourself to get to the next level.  This is great to add onto your resume and even better to bring up during your semi or annual performance review.  Before choosing what course to take consider the opportunities you would like to seek within your company and the capabilities that they would look for in a successful candidate to ensure that the skills you are developing are a match for that position.

There are many online platforms that allow you to take course online and at your own pace and time so that you can fit it around your schedule.  Even better, there are a lot of online learning programs that you can take that are available for free.  I have actually put together a list of free online learning platforms in another post if your interested.  Check it out HERE ~ 5 Online Learning Platforms with Free Courses to Help You Up-Level Your Life.

2. Start a Project
There are always opportunities for continuous improvement in any business.  So why not take some time to look into ways that your company could improve by implementing a better process, tool or strategy.  Then propose this to your boss as a project that you are willing to lead.  This will again show your value at the company and that you are a forward thinker.  If you are struggling to come up with ideas just ask your boss or your colleagues if there is a project that they were already considering that you could lead.  They will for sure have something on the backburner and be grateful to have someone ambitious to take it over and see it through.

While this will add more workload in the short term, it will pay off in the long term, as you will have gained new knowledge, have something additional to add to your resume and you will have proven yourself as a valuable employee to your management team. By boosting your company, you are in turn, boosting your career.

3. Network.

In order to reach the next level of success in your career you need to be visible within your organization.  You cannot be promoted if the management team does not know that you even exist, or you have done nothing to stand out amongst your fellow colleagues.  One of the best ways to overcome this is to start networking.  If you are within a large organization there are usually different groups that you can support and join.  For instance, I was involved in a Women in Leadership group, or there are charitable groups, or sport teams that you can join.  Ask your HR representative if you are unsure what different groups are available.  Then join and become part of the team to support, meet new people within your company, and put yourself out there.

You can, and should, also consider networking outside of your company.   All industries have different networking associations that you can join they are just an easy google search away.  They put on different events both virtual and in person.  Most events usually have a speaker or different group sessions where you are being taught on a specific subject relevant to your industry.  You benefit from learning something new that you can take back to your job and you get to meet other people within the same industry to grow your network.  Even better, you could be one of those speakers at the next event. This would be amazing to add to your resume and even better sure to get your noticed at work!

4. Ask for a Raise

One of the most simplest and most overlooked ways to bring your career to the next level is to actually ask for it.  Most women hate to ask their boss for a raise or promotion but the simple truth is most would get it if they would only be willing to ask.  I would say that the majority of us go into our jobs, work hard, and go above and beyond to add value to our companies.  If that is the case, we should be compensated for that, as your efforts matter and are supporting the company's objectives and on-going success.

There is a 5 step strategy that you can use that will prepare you to make a request for the raise, give you the confidence you need to follow through and actually set you up in a way that has your boss actually enthusiastic about giving you that promotion.  I have put this full process together for you HERE in another post.  Trust me, if you follow these steps you will be earning thousands more and onto your next career step in no time!

5. Set Your Intentions.

If you want to get to the next level you need to make that clear to your direct manager.  The management team in most companies have a lot going themselves and aren't mind readers so they cannot know what your future goals are unless you share it with them.

So schedule some time with your boss.  Politely let them know where you see yourself in the future within the company and simply ask them how is it that you can get there.  Agree on a development plan together along with a timeline to achieve it and voila, you are on your way to the next level of your career!
