IN THIS ARTICLE:
Stop waiting for someday!

Stop settling for just what happens to you and start crafting your own memories.  We are all guilty of letting our day-to-day life take over as we create these mental wish lists of things that we are going to do both big and small, from taking that dream vacation to going to the museum or a picnic on the weekend. All the while life passes by and we are losing out of creating memories and connections with our loved ones. It is time that you take control and start crafting your experiences so that you can have a life well lived, a life you look forward to living. In this article we walk you through how you can get started and give you:
  • All the resources & motivation you need to move forward.
  • Strategies on how to remove unwanted activities from your life & add more of the good stuff.
  • A free downloadable "Experience Your Life Template" to help you start planning a life you actually love.

I have come to know that a big part of creating a fulfilling and meaningful life is about experiences.  If we are not careful we can easily get swept up in the day to day to-do lists and other people's priorities and all the while time continues to move forward.  Before you know it months or even years have passed and your list of things that you would like to do "someday" grows longer. Our time here is limited, so why not take some of it to craft your experiences and by extension your life?

CRAFTING YOUR EXPERIENCES

,It is truly up to us to decide how we are going to spend our time.  However, in reality, most us are just going through the motions playing defense against all of the incoming stimuli that is vying for our time and attention.  All the while, we create a mental wish-list of the things we want to do both big and small, like taking that drawing class, visiting the art museum, or going on that big trip you've always dreamt about.  I think that it's time that we stopped wishing away our lives and actually started to live them.

So, Starting Right Now:
  • Grab your calendar and block off a weekend every 6 weeks. If you can do it every 4 weeks even better!
  • Decide when your longer vacation(s) will be, and block it.
  • Each day block off one hour for yourself.
Now get out there and start making some memories.  What are you going to do every 6 weeks that you always wanted to do but have put off, big or small.  Plan a weekend get away with your friends, buy the tickets to the workshop, sign up for the course, start training for the marathon, take a hike or even just plan a game night or dinner party at home with some friends.  Whatever it is, make sure it's in your calendar so it will happen, and even better, so you can look forward to it.

Then start planning your bigger vacation.  Pay for it now, if possible, so you can't back out.  Where will you stay, what do you want to eat, where do you want to go, what do you want to see?

Then each day plan at minimum one hour just for yourself.  What will you do…. Take a bath, read a book, journal, watch tv, take a nap?  Block of the time and for that hour really enjoy it and be in the moment.

I can already hear the protests, an hour a day or a weekend here and there, impossible! I have no time.  But if you don't have an hour a day or a weekend every couple of months, then, well, you don't really have a life.

Each experience that you create for yourself adds up over the months, over the years, over the span of your life and these are what creates your memories, connection, meaning; essentially your life.  So make sure that you are the one that is creating those moments for yourself, that you are designing your life or you are at risk of living a life half lived!

REMOVING THE UNWANTED

It's all good to create the experiences we do want, but at the same time, if we are being realistic, each of us have things that we actually need to do and that we don't look forward to doing. While this is a part of our everyday life that we need to deal with there are some ways that we can make it more manageable and less stressful, like:
  • Batch the tasks and do them on one day each month.  This way you can plan for it, and its not something that is taking up your mental real estate.  You only need to tackle it one day a month (or bi-weekly) leaving you feeling more free the rest of the time.
  • Make a list of all the tasks you don't like.  Create 4 Columns on the same page titled - Plan, Delegate, Automate & Eliminate.
    • Now for each of these items take some time to consider if you absolutely must do it yourself.  If yes, put it in the plan column and add it to your "task day" each month.
    • For each item consider if you can delegate the task to someone else, a family member, a colleague, or hire it out, like a maid or laundry service and put in the delegate column.
    • For each item investigate whether you can automate the task, so it can run on repeat without you having to think about it, like your investments, paying your bills, or even grocery shopping. Then add this to the automate list.
    • Lastly for each item, be really honest with yourself and decide if it actually needs doing.  Sometimes we end up with tasks that are really not that important and don't need doing but continue to do them out of habit, like, cleaning up every night, or planting the garden each year while actually hating gardening.  Be honest with yourself and if its not needed put it in the eliminate column and remove it from your life.
  • For extra points, create a happiness list and start writing down the little things you love doing.  Maybe its going to the farmers market, baking, sunbathing or eating strawberries, whatever it is write it on the list.  Then start intentionally adding these into your life each day, week or month so that you are adding to the good experiences and making each day just a little bit better.
I have created an Experience Your Life Template that you can use to make more room in your life for the things you love and help you craft your memories through your experiences.  Become a Life Designer and get it HERE.

DESIGNING A LIFE THAT YOU LOVE

The more experiences you have the more you have to offer. The more that you are exposed to, the more you will learn and can draw from in every other faucet of your life.  The more things you do, the more interesting you become, enabling you to create more connection in your life. But most of all, when you look back at your life, you don’t want to do so in regret.  Instead, look back and smile at the life you created full, onefull of memories and meaning.

Don't settle for the moments that just happen to you, create the moments that shape your life!
