The Women who are Changing the World for the Better

There are so many women in the world that are making it a better place, but are often overlooked.  As 50% of the population we have supported global progress in so many areas, and the world would not look as it does now without the contribution of these bold, badass women. This post highlights all the good that women are sending out into the world and to provide inspiration for myself and others to know that we can do the same. We look at:

• The impact of women you probably have never heard of but were crucial in making the world what it is today
• The trailblazers that are out there now, paving the way & accelerating progress
• The slow but increasing shift in the increased representation of women in the political arena across the world

In celebration of women and the contribution we have made in shaping the world,  I wanted to highlight the women that have, and are, changing the world for the better.  These contributions have often been overlooked so it's not surprising that many women who have played a critical role in the world as we know it, are ones that we have never heard of, like:

• Wangari Maathai, the first woman to get her PHD in central and eastern Africa who was an environmentalist, winner of the Nobel Peace Price (first time its been given to an African American women) and responsible for the planting of hundreds of thousands of trees and providing work and income to women in need.
• Lise Meitner, Jewish physicist, the actual person responsible for discovering nuclear fusion (responsible for nuclear energy and nuclear bombs) who was left out of the published papers surrounding the find due to the fact that she was both a women and a Jew. She was eventually recognized and awarded the Nobel prize for her work among other prestigious and deserved awards.
• Marie Stopes, a lady we should all thank as she has campaigned on our behalf for the freedom to choose when and if we would like to have children, she was an advocate of planned parenthood for women, contraception and sexual needs. She published "Birth Control News" and opened one of the first ever birth control clinics
• I bet you didn't know that the first known computer programmer was a woman!!! Ada Lovelace, was the first to realize that machines were capable of more and was responsible for writing the first ever algorithm for a machine.

With all of the negative press we have seen over the last few years, it would seem that we are a completely divided world and it may sometimes feel disheartening due to the slow rate of change and female representation at the highest of levels.  The good news, however, is that even in politics we are starting to see more and more women taking leadership roles in many countries. Ensuring that our voices are being heard and that all points of view are starting to get attention on the world stage.  Negative press unfortunately has a tendency to spread faster than the positive, let's change that, check out the below video and see what I mean:

​We no longer have to wait and hope for the assistance of someone else in order to go after our dreams. We can go out in the world and make a life for ourselves and a difference to the lives of others.  They data shows, when you support women, you support a whole community, as they take their successes back to help lift up those around them.  The women are coming...
​

Representation matters.  We need to see what's possible in life so that we are granted permission to dream bigger to be bigger.  We need to see our story in the stories of other women who are doing big things in order to know that it's possible to overcome obstacles and to end old cycles of behavior, to create new and better ones for ourselves and those around us, to empower other women.  These women are that for us, let them give you the permission to go after your dreams and know that you can achieve them.
